Maths Curriculum
The National Curriculum for mathematics aims to ensure that all pupils:
-
become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that pupils develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately
-
reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and generalisations, and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language
-
can solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions
Maths at Boarshaw Primary
At Boarshaw Primary we use the Visual Calculation Policy Overview to help guide us with which methods to use for each calculation. Maths is taught daily across all year groups with an emphasis on mental maths, which is taught for the first 15 minutes at the beginning of each maths lesson. Lessons are tailored for all abilities focusing on developing fluency and consolidating skills using mastery and greater depth activities.
Have a look at our maths policy for further details on how maths is taught in our school. Our whole school long term plan and progression document show what is taught across each year group and how units build on previous learning.
Times Tables
All Y4 children will have their multiplication skills formally tested in the summer term of Year 4 from 2020. We are currently having a big push on our times tables and aim to ensure all pupils can use these easily in their every day maths activities. Therefore we need the help of our parents! Times tables homework is sent home weekly and pupils are encouraged to log on to the Times Tables Rockstar app and complete challenges to help increase how quickly they can answer their times tables correctly.
